Are Standing desks a good idea?

Because I find sitting at a desk to be uncomfortable, I installed a sit/stand up workstation at the office. As a matter of fact, I am typing at it right now. The setup is adjustable and allows me to either sit or stand. Although the new contraption is pretty goofy looking, I am digging it so far.  We'll see how I feel about it after using it for a while.

As you may be aware, a number of studies have affirmed the health benefits of standing more and sitting less. Some of the benefits of standing over sitting include reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, and even some types of cancer.

If you are thinking a standing workstation might be in your future, here are a few of articles that I found helpful in illuminating the pros and cons (not sure what the psychology behind the magic of the number five in all these articles is):

  1. 5 Health Benefits of a Standing Desk

  2. 5 Things You’re Doing Wrong At Your Standing Desk

  3. 5 Ways Your Standing Desk Is Doing More Harm Than Good

As with anything else, too much of a good thing can create more problems that it solves, so be sure to do your homework on the proper setup and technique before making the switch to a standing desk. Feel free to stop by if you want to check out the new setup.

Yours in wellness,

Joe Curcio, L. Ac.
